Fifth Third Donates Another $100k to Cancer Center

Fifth Third Bank has announced its second $100,000 donation to the Cowell Family Cancer Center project at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. With this donation, Fifth Third emphasized the hospital's use of local contractors. "We appreciate the economic impact this facility will have on northern Michigan residents and patients in terms of job,s access, and beyond that, Munson's commitment to the local economy through its support of local construction firms," says David Shooltz, community president of Fifth Third Northern Michigan. As part of its recent round of construction bids, Munson awarded $17 million in contracts to 12 contractors from the Grand Traverse region. The project broke ground in May and plans call for the center to open in 2016. Local firms working on the project include Advanced Fire Protection, Bay Masonry, Bloxsom Roofing, Comstock Construction, DW Mechanical, Floor Covering Brokers, Grand Traverse Nurseries, Integrity and Balance, Molon Excavating, National Coatings and Windemuller Electric. GTB Awards Nearly $690,000 in Gaming Revenue

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians has announced the distribution of $689,660 – the first installment of its twice-yearly two percent allocation of video gaming revenue to local units of government. Its largest allocation – $100,000 – went to both Suttons Bay Public Schools and Traverse City Area Public Schools for their Indian Education Program. Northport Schools received $45,000 and Elk Rapids Schools, $30,000. A government to government contract with Leelanau County for its prisoner housing contract received $63,875. Among the other recipients were the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, the Father Fred Food Pantry Program (via GT County), and the Leelanau County Senior Services Program. Caring For Kelsey Fundraiser Friday

Bill Marsh on South Airport in Traverse City is raising funds this Friday (Aug. 8) to support Kelsey Clous, a 21-year-old from Kingsley who is fighting a rare blood clotting disorder. The fundraiser includes hundreds of fresh baked items, a silent auction, lunch, Moomers ice cream, oil changes and car washes. Cash donations also accepted online. Father Fred Raises $58k, Receives Additional $25k

June 25, 2014: The Ticker of Traverse City Business Magazine

Supporters of The Father Fred Foundation raised $58,103 during the five-week long Art Van Charity Challenge, good enough for sixth place and an additional $25,000 grant from Art Van Furniture. Organizations from all over the Midwest competed in the fundraising challenge, though Father Fred was the only northern Michigan charity. The donations will go toward Father Fred's housing assistance program with the grant further supporting housing efforts, as well as the food pantry and financial aid programs. Permalink

Funds Needed to Help Fireworks June 2, 2014

Believe it or not, the 4th of July holiday is just over a month away and the TC Boom Boom Club is actively raising funds to put on a brilliant fireworks display over West Grand Traverse Bay. According to club spokesperson Tim Hinkley, it costs $45,000 for a 30-minute show – an amount the nonprofit hopes to raise via support from municipalities, businesses and individuals. The Boom Boom Club was formed back in 2001 to build grassroots support for the annual celebration. Great Lakes Fireworks of East Jordan puts on the display. Munson Cancer Center Underway

Munson Cancer Center Underway May 2, 2014

Munson officials and employees lifted the ceremonial shovels yesterday to mark the groundbreaking for the new Cowell Family Cancer Center located on the Munson Medical Center campus in Traverse City. Officials announced that $17.3 million in donations has been secured, led by a $5 million dollar gift from TC resident Casey Cowell. Cowell is a Detroit native. He co-founded U.S. Robotics in 1976 and served as CEO before the company merged with 3Com in 1997. Reality Check: US Charity Donations Suggest Growing Confidence

--Biggest Growth Seen for Major Gifts; Community Donations Show Signs of Decline

PHILADELPHIA (MNI) - Charitable giving by U.S. individuals, foundations, and corporations gained in the first quarter as stock prices rose and the job market improved, but donations have not fully recovered to their pre-recession level, fundraising professionals said.
Anecdotal reports from philanthropic trade groups and the leading academic source of data on the U.S. charity sector indicate that improving economic confidence among donors, especially those giving $1 million or more, is boosting the income of universities, hospitals, arts organizations and other recipients of charitable gifts.

There is some evidence that donations from those much lower on the income scale is declining, perhaps as a result of greater competition for limited funds, in a trend that could disrupt fundraising strategies in future, experts said.

But overall giving so far this year has continued the solid gains seen in 2013, according to preliminary indications ahead of the industry's annual data that are not published until mid-year.
