TC Ticker reports Pedal to Suttons Bay

Pedal 17 Miles To Suttons Bay July 21, 2015

If you've been excited to pedal your way to Suttons Bay this summer – but not as excited to pedal back – the Tour de Tart this Friday, July 24 is for you. The 15th annual event takes cyclists along the TART and Leelanau trails for an evening bike ride that culminates in a meal at the Suttons Bay Marina before a bus ride back to TC. New location for the start this year – Darrow Park – which will eliminate the need to ride through downtown traffic and to cross U.S. 31. Parking will be available at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church and the surrounding neighborhood. This allows riders to get right on the trail and pedal the 17 miles to Suttons Bay. ISEA gears up for annual Great Lakes Celebration

SUTTONS BAY — Boat tours, children’s games, live music, food, a classic boat show and much more will be lining the coast of Lake Michigan’s Suttons Bay next weekend for the Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) Great Lakes Celebration. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 25, the event will be held at the Education Center in Suttons Bay and admission is free.

Organizers say all ages will be able to find something to do while celebrating what the Great Lakes has to offer. “At the event, there will be dockside tours,” said ISEA’s Lisa Sitkins. “There will be kids’ experiments, games and crafts – so there will be things for 1-8 year-olds and for 8-12 year-olds. We’ll have something for everybody.” The event will also be geared for adults with the inclusion of boat shop demonstrations, a nautical flea market, several display booths and multiple Great Lakes-related demonstrations.

Returning for 2015 will be the popular classic boat show that originally launched the celebration. “It used to be called the classic boat show, and I’m not sure how long ago that was,” Sitkins said, estimating it was about five years ago. “It was mostly just classic boats but we’ve been adding kids’ activities and it’s geared more toward a wider audience now.” Those interested in submitting a boat for the show need to fill out a registration sheet online at schoolship.org or contact Tom Kelly at tkelly@schoolship.org.

New to the celebration, the nonprofit ISEA will be hosting remote-operated vehicle demonstrations and a search-and-rescue demonstration involving a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter. The demonstrations — along with multiple food vendors — will be operating around 2 p.m.

The Inland Seas Education Association opened in 1989 with a simple message: “inspire curiosity, stewardship and passion for our Great Lakes.” For more than 25 years, the nonprofit has provided lessons on aquatic science, environmental awareness and sailing to more than 100,000 students coming from schools throughout the Midwest. “We really rely on the Great Lakes for our economy,” Sitkins said. “It’s important to protect that (resource) and in the process of the celebration, we get our message out to the community on the importance of stewardship.”

Every year, as many as 5,000 students sail and learn about the Great Lakes aboard ISEA’s science-lab equipped Schoolship Inland Seas and chartered Manitou. The lessons taught during Schoolship programs are aligned with the Michigan curriculum expectations for science and social studies, and often go beyond what is traditionally taught in a classroom. Programs offered throughout the summer are geared for individuals of all ages and cover a variety of Great Lakes-related topics.

Deb and Brian Cairns, owners of Sleder's Tavern in Traverse City, along with fellow Hickory Hills supporters will host a day-long fundraiser in support of an improvement plan for the recreation area on Sat., Aug. 29. The day will include a 5K/10K run, a pancake breakfast at Sleder's, an 18-hole golf tournament at Bay Meadows and a disc golf tournament at Hickory Hills. An awards ceremony for all events begins at 4pm, kicking off an evening party under the tent at Sleder's, complete with live music, food, beverages and raffles and a silent auction. Bowl for Kids Raises $94k, Recognizes Top Fundraiser : News : The Ticker

The recent Bowl for Kids' Sake event – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan's signature annual fundraising event – raised $94,000 thanks to more than 260 individuals representing area businesses and local groups getting pledges and bowling. The organization is also recognizing its biggest fundraiser, Ron Smith, by awarding him with two round trip airline tickets courtesy of Cherry Capital Airport. "Ron is like an army of one," says BBBS Executive Director Cecilia Chesney. "Now he would say, 'It's all the people who surround me that do the work,' but he's relentless – no job is too big for Ron. We are so blessed to have him on our side." Smith, human resource director for Bill Marsh Automotive, is a longtime supporter of the organization. He is a past "big brother" and has been the top fundraiser for Bowl for Kids' Sake for five years in a row, raising more than $20,000 with this year his highest total of $7,150.

Nine projects will share $40,300 in funds from the 60th Northwestern Michigan College Barbecue – set for Sunday, May 17.


Every year, college employees submit proposals for barbecue funds,
contingent on funds raised that day. A Barbecue Board, comprised of
college employees and community volunteers, then makes the final
selection. This year's recipients are:

 - Student Success Center workspace

Park is holding a raffle to win access for two to stand at the top of a
tower of the Mackinac Bridge, 552 feet above the water, for a bird’s-eye
view of the Straits of Mackinac.

THOMPSONVILLE – The Michigan Legacy Art Park is one of just 25 nonprofit organizations out of nearly 800 applicants to receive a certificate for a tower tour of the Mackinac Bridge – a tour it will
raffle off as part of a unique fundraising effort.

“We are excited to have been chosen this year,” said Art Park Executive Director Renee Hintz. “We decided to hold a raffle to give more thrill-seekers a chance to win – and at $10 per ticket, it’s worth a chance for such a rare experience.”

The winning ticket will give access for two people to stand at the top of a tower of the Mackinac Bridge, 552 feet above the water, for a bird’s-eye view of the Straits of Mackinac. The hour-and-a-half tour includes an elevator ride up the interior of the tower. When the elevator reaches its highest point, there is a 40-foot
ladder that leads to the top of the tower for a breathtaking experience.

Between 10,000-12,000 attendees braved the frigid temperatures to participate in the holiday event, donating dollars and food products in lieu of admission. Photo by Windborne Photography 2014 champions Troy Broad and Pam McCormick danced a bolero last monthand held on to the lead, taking first place in the dance portion of the competition. They also topped the leader board in fundraising with more than $126,000 for Leelanau Christian Neighbors.

TRAVERSE CITY – Another successful season saw new records set during the 2014 SwingShift and the Stars Dance-off for Charity. Though the dance portion of the event is over, there’s still time to donate and
participate in this fundraising event.

Season seven saw new and returning dance professionals taking the floor during four nights of competition. Veteran instructor and former champion Hans Benghauser suffered the first injury of the event, but everyone was prepared for such an emergency.

“Immediate attention was given to address the situation, allow for recovery time, and put in back-up plans if needed,” said Leslie Haskin, event coordinator. “Our number one focus was the health and well-being of our injured cast member.”

Benghauser recovered and returned to the dance floor with partner Beth Footh for Brickways Foundation. It was the team of Troy Broad and Pam McCormick dancing for Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN), however, that danced away with the win. They took an early lead by one-tenth of a point and never looked back, winning the overall championship by eight-tenths of a point.

A new Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail event, “Sips & Soups,” is also a
benefit for the Leelanau Christian Neighbors’ food pantries. Two dates
are available, Jan. 10 and Jan. 24, and tickets are only $10 per person.

LEELANAU – The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail has announced a newwine tasting event that’s sure to warm both body and soul this winter.

The new event, “Sips & Soups,” will pair hot soups with Leelanauwines at 22 wineries along the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail, and is abenefit for Leelanau Christian Neighbors’ food pantries, with donations helping to re-stock the shelves after holiday needs are met.


Sips & Soups will take place from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 and again on Saturday, Jan 24. Tickets are $10 per person and include a wine glass and a featured wine and soup pairing. From each ticket sold, $3 will be donated directly to Leelanau Christian Neighbors (LCN).


“We love that our community always joins together to get things done,” said LCN President Mary Stanton. “We do have poverty in our county, even though the beautiful views and large vacation homes make it seem
otherwise. We couldn’t be happier that the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association has chosen to donate to us, and we’re excited for what will surely be an incredibly fun event!”

It was a cold night but another heart-warming outcome for the annual Sleep Out co-sponsored by the Chamber and the Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency. Thanks to the Sleep Out participants and support from Consumers Energy and DTE Energy, the Sleep Out raised $18,976 to be used by the NMCAA to help families in Northern Michigan keep up on their winter heating bills. City To Host Water Station Fundraiser

Traverse City leaders will host a community fundraiser at the State Theatre on Tuesday, October 28 at 6pm in an effort to raise dollars for the installation of another water bottle filling station in city limits. Commissioners Jeanine Easterday and Jim Carruthers and Mayor Michael Estes have led the effort to install the new stations throughout the city to reduce waste created by plastic water bottles. Six such stations have been funded to date. At the State fundraiser, Estes will introduce a screening of documentary film Divide in Concord, a 2014 Traverse City Film Festival hit that follows the "entertaining tale of banning bottled water in small town America." While the event is free to the public, a $20 donation is recommended. Estes says an anonymous donor has agreed to match up to $3,500 in received donations - enough to cover the cost of a $7,000 station. "In a three-month timeframe, (the six installed stations) may have saved the discarding of up to 50,000 disposable water bottles in the city's waste stream," says Estes. A special group of ladies raised more than $10,000 in a matter of minutes.

A Michigan native started a group called 100 Women Who Care which raises money for local organizations.

Tonight, the Traverse City group met for their quarterly meeting and picked a deserving organization. "It is an opportunity for people who want to make a difference, to get together and make a huge difference, there's so much power in numbers," says Kristin Marinoff, 100 Women Who Care Grand Traverse County, co-founder.

The idea behind the group, 100 Women Who Care is for each person to donate $100 every meeting towards an organization that really could make a difference in the community. "It's an amazing opportunity to learn about the needs in our community, even the organization that doesn't win or the two that don't win for the night," says Marinoff.

The three groups picked to compete for the money tonight were A Matter of Honor, Grand Traverse Dyslexia, and Meals on Wheels. "We had three dynamic presenters, really great speakers and great organizations, so it was a very tough decision," says Marinoff.

Out of the three organizations that the ladies got to vote on tonight, the winner was A Matter of Honor. They help veterans in the Traverse City area who suffer with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The new organization was thrilled to receive more than $10,000 in just a matter of minutes. "A Matter of Honor has existed primarily on seed money that I put in the pot over a year ago, we've been so busy trying to teach Traverse City about PTSD that we haven't done any fundraising," says Linda Fletcher, chief executive of A Matter of Honor.

The money will go towards their big Veteran's Day event and help raise more awareness in the community. "And certainly it will be very beneficial to A Matter of Honor, we certainly need the funds to continue our mission," says Fletcher.

Traverse City Turkey Trot Registration Now Open

Registration is now open for the Seventh Annual Traverse City Turkey Trot, a 5K run/walk event taking place Thanksgiving Day, November 27 at 9am at Thirlby Field Stadium in downtown Traverse City. A "5 Mile Flier" is also available for racers seeking a longer route. The family-friendly event, which also permits runners with leashed dogs, will raise funds for Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS), TART Trails and TRED North. Awards will be given to the top overall male and female finishes, as well as the top age group finishers for males and females. Early bird registration, which ends November 5, is $35 for adults 19 and older and $15 for youth 18 and under. Registration will increase to $40 and $20 respectively at the end of the early bird period. Participants registering by November 15 will receive a guaranteed event shirt. A packet pick-up event featuring food and special activities will take place on the north side of Thirlby Field on Wednesday, November 26 from 5-8pm; participants can also pick up their packets on race day from 7-8:30am.
