Focus on blessings

What a beautiful sight on Labor Day weekend as I rounded the corner coming off Old Mission Peninsula. What appeared to be hundreds (stretching it, I didn’t count) of large American flags, standing tall, waving proudly in the breeze as they lined the street along the edge of Bryant Park. My heart swelled with pride.

I caught my breath and breathed, “Thank you, God,” that we live in the most wonderful country in the world. Praise God for his blessing and “God bless the Red, White and Blue.”

I appreciate Kiwanis for reminding me how blessed I am. Join me in putting away the negatives and focus on our blessings. Karen Wood

GTB Awards Nearly $690,000 in Gaming Revenue

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians has announced the distribution of $689,660 – the first installment of its twice-yearly two percent allocation of video gaming revenue to local units of government. Its largest allocation – $100,000 – went to both Suttons Bay Public Schools and Traverse City Area Public Schools for their Indian Education Program. Northport Schools received $45,000 and Elk Rapids Schools, $30,000. A government to government contract with Leelanau County for its prisoner housing contract received $63,875. Among the other recipients were the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, the Father Fred Food Pantry Program (via GT County), and the Leelanau County Senior Services Program. GT Pie Creates Endowment for Youth

Grand Traverse Pie Company is celebrating its 18th birthday today (July 19), by creating an endowment: Michigan Partners Helping Michigan's Youth. Today through July 26, GT Pie is dedicating a portion of all pie sales to the fund, which provides financial support for individuals in Michigan's foster care program who aspire to continue into higher education. The goal is to raise $12,000 during this year's celebration, with all money going directly to student needs, including housing, school supplies and other expenses related to their education. In addition to the birthday celebration, GT Pie partners will be matching funds. The endowment will be celebrated each year on the company's birthday. GT Pie Co., founded in 1996 by Mike and Denise Busley, has two locations in Traverse City, and thirteen additional shops around the state and in Indiana. Permalink
